Here's what most drivers never learn: your windshield and your side windows are made of different glass.
Windshields are laminated — two layers of glass bonded around a plastic interlayer. That construction blocks nearly all UV radiation, both UVB (the burning rays) and UVA (the aging, deep-penetrating rays).
Your side and rear windows are usually tempered glass. Tempered glass stops most UVB, which is why you don't get a visible sunburn on your commute. But it lets a large share of UVA pass straight through — and UVA is the wavelength that penetrates deepest into the skin, breaking down collagen, accelerating aging, and contributing to skin cancer risk over time.
So every drive down the 101, every trip from Goleta to Montecito, every afternoon parked facing west — your left arm and the left side of your face are quietly collecting UVA exposure. Year after year.

Santa Barbara's marine layer gives people a false sense of security. Fog and overcast skies scatter visible light, but a significant amount of UV still gets through cloud cover.
